Supporting Agriculture as MP

The United Nations World Food Day through it’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is recognized annually on October 16th. This commemorates its founding in 1945 and marks their 75th anniversary.

The FAO has partnered with several regions to make livelihoods more sustainable and equitable. In celebrating World Food Day, the goal is to make food systems more resilient. This assists those most susceptible to hunger and malnutrition.

Many individuals around the world remain vulnerable to food shortages. Global agricultural production has had no significant development. It is a fact that over two billion individuals do not have access to safe and nutritious food.

Global food systems are imbalanced and there is an insufficiency in universal food production and distribution. Obesity, hunger, food loss and waste are only a few of the issues that underline this shortcoming.

Agriculture Issues in Mayaro

The COVID-19 pandemic has added, threatening to reverse important gains in food security and nutrition. Preserving safe and nutritious food access continues to be an essential part of the response to this pandemic.

As the Member of Parliament for Mayaro, it is important that I highlight some issues plaguing farmers within my constituency. Farmers in various areas are being. This ranges from proper storage facilities, critical agricultural resources, innovative farm methods and agricultural access roads.

As perceived by the FAO; we all have a role to play in transforming our food systems and ending world hunger. I believe transforming our food processing, consumption and disposal methods can lead to life improvement. This can ensure we meet our future needs, without degrading and depleting the natural resources on which we all rely.

We can all do our part to reduce wastage. We can advocate for governments and organizations to share knowledge and support sustainable food systems and livelihoods. As your Member of Parliament, I acknowledge the words of the United Nations; “Together we can grow, nourish and sustain our world.”
