World Down Syndrome Day 21st March, 2021: “Connect with me” or “#CONNECT.”
World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. The date selected to observe WDSD, the 21st of the third (3) month, signifies the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st Chromosome which causes Down syndrome.
On this day, people with Down syndrome and those who live and work with them throughout the world organize and participate in activities and events to raise public awareness and create a global voice advocating for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of individuals with Down syndrome.
This year’s theme for World Down Syndrome Day is “Connect with me” or “#CONNECT.” We all know it’s been really hard due to the pandemic, hence the reason for the theme for this year focuses on the unique ways we are all connected and the ways in which we are connected with those who have Down syndrome.
Why connect? We connect so that we can:
- Share experiences, stories, and ideas
- Empower each other to advocate for equal rights for individuals with Down syndrome
- Individuals with Down syndrome can connect with other individuals with Down syndrome
- Ways for people with Down syndrome to improve their learning capabilities
There is a story behind every person, there is a reason why they are the way they are. Think about that, and respect them for who they are. ~Marcandangel
