Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world!.

This year celebrated on the 8th March, International Women’s Day focuses on promoting and empowering the rights of women across the world. All women from around the globe are deserving of an equal future, free from stereotypes and violence; a future that is peaceful with equal rights, sustainability and with opportunities for each and every one of them. In order for us to get there, the world is in need of women to be at every table where decisions are being made.

This year, the theme for International Women’s Day, “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world,” recognizes the tremendous efforts made by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and highlights the gaps that remain. As interpreted by the UN, only by ensuring the rights of women will we get to justice and inclusion, economies that work for all, and sustaining our shared environment now and for future generations. Ending all forms of discrimination against women and girls is not only a basic human right, but it also has a multiplier effect across all other development areas. Yet, women are still being underrepresented in both decision-making and public life, as revealed in a recent report by the UN Secretary-General.

As a representative of the people, it is crucial that I emphasize the ongoing need for more to be done in prioritizing and addressing the important role women play in society. This is why, this year’s International Women’s Day is a rallying cry for Generation Equality, to act for an equal future for all. The full and effective participation of women in leadership and in all other aspects of life drives progress for everyone.
