International Day of Happiness March 20th 2021: ‘Keep Calm. Stay Wise. Be Kind’
The theme for this year’s International Day of Happiness is ‘Keep Calm. Stay Wise. Be Kind’ and is, of course, in response to the COVID pandemic. This current global crisis has substantially affected our mental health and challenged us in more ways than one. This year’s International Day of Happiness is focused on finding uplifting and positive ways to look after ourselves and one another.
During such times of instability, anxiety and other emotional responses are to be expected. The Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey states during the pandemic, a larger than average share of young adults (ages 18-24) report symptoms of anxiety and/or depressive disorder (56%). An additional challenge for those experiencing mental distress during the pandemic is that social distancing regulations make it more difficult to access appropriate mental healthcare services.
Exploring the theme further, Action for Happiness created a coping calendar and suggests:
Keep calm. There are lots of things outside our control. Let’s remember to breathe and focus on what really matters so we can respond constructively.
Stay wise. Making wise choices helps everyone. Let’s choose positive actions that support our well-being and help others to do the same.
Be kind. We’re all in this together, even when we’re forced apart. Let’s stay connected and reach out to help others who may be in need.
