Observed each year on the 17th of October, the United Nations recognizes the International Day for Eradication of Poverty. Poverty entails more than just a lack of productive resources or income to ensure sustainable livelihoods. It is inclusive of social discrimination, hunger, malnutrition, and limited access to education and other basic amenities. International Day for Eradication of Poverty presents an opportunity to acknowledge the struggles of those living in poverty.

The year 2015 recorded that approximately 736 million people lived below the international poverty line of US$1.90 a day. In a world characterized by an unprecedented level of economic development, the fact that millions of persons are living in extreme poverty is a moral outrage.

Poverty in Trinidad

In Trinidad, citizens are experiencing poverty due to limited access to health care and a lack of nutritious food. Additionally, there are many cases of housing issues and an absence of basic infrastructure. In order to break this cycle of underdevelopment, we must take action. It is necessary to identify those sectors with potential for job creation and sustainable long-term growth.

Particularly in low-income countries, there is often a scarcity in the necessary abilities to achieve broader development goals due to limited resources. A need therefore arises, which consists of shifting resources and policy focus from traditional sectors with low productivity and technology. Policies enhancing growth and long-term transformation need to be prioritized.

The theme for this year places focus on acting together to achieve social and environmental justice for all. It recognizes that everyone must come together to end poverty and discrimination. I know this will build a sustainable future. One in which the needs of the present are met without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. As your Member of Parliament, I acknowledge the need to build an equitable world where there is social justice for all.
