For far too long, there has been an onslaught of violence generated against women. The Global Database on Violence stated that approximately 137 women are killed by a member of their family every single day. Precariously, the COVID-19 pandemic, have revealed all sorts of Violence Against Women, specifically domestic. The United Nations therefore recognizes the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Every year on the 25th of November, this day serves as an opportunity. It amplify the call for global action aimed at the prohibition and eventually, the complete eradication of violence against women and girls. This can range from intimate partner violence, human trafficking and sexual violence to include female genital mutilation and child marriages.
Global Attempt to Eliminate Violence Against Women
Violence continues to be an impediment towards achieving development, equality and peace. As a universal dilemma, it undeniably requires a global collective effort. Women and girls represent half of the world’s population and therefore, half of it’s potential. It has therefore been shown that empowering women has a positively direct impact upon productivity and ultimately, economic growth.
As your representative, it is crucial that I emphasize the need for more to be done in addressing violence against women. Being the only male in a house allowed me to appreciate the value and the significance women bring to society. It is my duty as a father of three girls, to do my part in this substantial campaign against violence. It should be the primary focus of nations across the globe to terminate the multiple forms of gender violence, whilst securing equal opportunities.
